Biswanath College was established in 1960 in the then undivided Darrang District. In those days, there was not a single college between Tezpur Subdivision of Darrang District and North Lakhimpur. Biswanath College was the fruit of many enthusiastic people who had golden visions of filling this void and paving paths for the upcoming generations for their higher educations. A grand meeting was organized at Biswanath Chariali by these people and it was at this meeting that the decision was made to establish a college for all the aspiring students between Pub Bharali River and Hawajan. And Finally Biswanath College was established on 7th September, 1960 with I.A First year, Night Shift as its first batch of Students.
7th September, 1960: This is the Birthday of Biswanath College.First Classes of the college were held at Anandiram Saikia Hall of Chariali H.S and M.P School. Later, on 1st August, 1961, a pompous inauguration Ceremony was held at the own premises of the college that saw Religious Rites, Kirtans and women chanting Urulis while the College Gate was inaugurated. The Gate has since then opened up the futures of many bright students who have brought fame to the land and its people. In the evening of 7th September, 1960, an inaugural meet had been organized presided by then Social Activist, late Nabin Chandra Bhattachraya, and the seat of Chieft Chief Guest was decorated by Late Sayeed Abdul Mallick who was an eminent Professor at Jagganath Baruah College, Jorhat.
Biswanath College always strives to be managed by an efficient Governing Body, comprising of college teachers and specialists from different fields of occupation and specializations.
The tenure of a Governing Body is usually 4 years. The objectives of the body ranges from decision making to the smooth running of the college.
Biswanath College is a reputed college not only Arts but also in Scientific Studies as well, and the College bears a glorious
history of milestones and achievements both of its Teachers and students as well.
Established in 7th September 1960, by a group of visionaries, Biswanath College today is the 3rd Largest College in Sonitpur District. With a large spacious and green campus with scenic surroundings, Biswanath College has continued to excel in producing talents that spread all over the world. People like Santa Ujir and Late Rimjhim Baruah, the famous vocalists of Assam, Tarun Saikia, the great Dramatist and the of Assam and famous actress Mridula Baruah, all had been students of this College !
The College celebrated its Silver Jubilee on 22nd, September, 1996 and its Golden Jubilee on 5th September, 2010.
And even today, after more than 53 years from its inception, the College happens to be the Dream of many bright Students and people from as far as Arunachal Pradesh have sent their wards for Higher Education at Biswanath College. Equipped with spacious classrooms with Overhead projectors, advanced Science Labs, a Large Spacious Library with more than 20,0000 books and a Hi-Tech Knowledge Hub, the college is an exalted centre for Higher Education.
Admission to Biswanath College is purely on merit basis. Selection procedure is largely based on the
performance of the student's in his passed last examination. The policy of reservation of seats is strictly in accordance of Government rules.
Prof. Amarjyoti Borthakur is one of the seniormost teachers of the Department. With his
vast experience spanning more than 30 years, he has gained popularity as one of the best
teachers with expectional teaching abilities.
In addition, apart from being a member of the Hon' Governing Body of the college, Prof. Borthakur is heading the IQAC (Internal Quality Assurance Cell) of the college
and actively monitors the quality of education at the college.
