Brief introduction to the department;
The Department of Assamese had started its educational journey in 1960 along with the establishment of the Biswanath College. At the initial years, only the general courses had been offered. However, later, the Department started teaching both the Honours and General courses. At present, it has been offering the general courses for Arts along with the Higher Secondary courses for Ars and Science.
Since September 2018, the Department of Assamese started the Post-Graduate course in Assamese under the Gauhati University and the strength of students is 20 per academic year. Further, a total number of 80 students are allowed to take admission in the Honours course in Assamese. The pass percentage of honours students in BA 6th semester has been 98% during the last several years. The Department has produced a good number of alumni who are serving in various administrative and academic posts of the state.
