Brief introduction to the Department

The Department of Chemistry was established on 7^th July, 1970. At the beginning, the Department started functioning only with the Higher Secondary Science Course (formerly referred to as Pre-University Course). The B. Sc. General Chemistry Course was introduced into the Department on 20^th July,1976 and later in 1980, Major Course of Chemistry under Gauhati University was launched in this Department. The Department was founded by former Head of the Department, Mr. Khiradhar Baruah, a well-known National Awardee as science communicator. His legacy was further reinforced by his successors.

Now, the Department offers undergraduate (UG) programmes at both Higher Secondary and Degree levels. To ensure quality education, the Department comprises of highly competent and motivated teachers, well-equipped laboratories and a departmental library. The Department consists of separate laboratories equipped with digital and sophisticated instruments for both Honours and Generic Courses. Students are constantly encouraged to pursue higher education. The Department has the privilege to produce alumni who are well placed in diverse domains across the globe.
