The Department of English was started with the establishment of the college in 1960. Initially, the Department of English offered instructions to BA General Course students. When Intermediate Course was started, English was taught to them besides the BA students. With the introduction of Science Stream in 1970, the department also started teaching English to the intermediate students of Science stream. Gradually, BSc, BCom and BCA courses were also introduced and the department has been  teaching  the students of these streams since then. Moreover, since 1985-86, the department has been offering BA Honours Course also. The Government of Assam sanctioned three posts in Arts stream and one post in Science stream for this department.
